French Plaza · Casco Antiguo, Panama City
Explore Plaza de Francia
Located at the southernmost tip of Casco Antiguo in Panama City, Plaza de Francia is a landmark that perfectly blends heavy history with extreme beauty. The obelisk at the center of the plaza is topped with a Gallic rooster, surrounded by marble busts and monument inscriptions, solemnly commemorating the tens of thousands of French engineers and laborers who sacrificed their lives to build the Panama Canal at the end of the 19th century, as well as the scientists who made outstanding contributions to conquering yellow fever. Today, this is the most popular leisure destination in the old town. The outer edge of the plaza is attached to the ancient Spanish seawall fortifications (Las Bóvedas). Strolling along the tree-lined waterfront promenade, you can not only admire the exquisite handicrafts sold by local indigenous people, but also overlook the Amador Causeway and the incredibly stunning modern skyscraper skyline of Panama City across the azure Bay of Panama. Here, centuries of historical vicissitudes and the prosperity of a modern metropolis are separated by just a strip of water.

Highlights
- Waterfront Promenade and Domes (Las Bóvedas): Plaza de Francia is not just a flat plaza. Its outer edge is an ancient Spanish defensive seawall, with the famous 'domes' (former prisons and warehouses) below. Visitors can stroll along the seawall promenade, which is one of the biggest selling points of the attraction.
- Excellent City Skyline View: Standing on the seawall of Plaza de Francia, you can enjoy a dead-angle-free view of Panama City's modern skyscraper skyline, the Amador Causeway, and the Bridge of the Americas across the Bay of Panama.
- Monument Details: The center of the plaza is not just a 'monument'. The top is crowned with a Gallic Rooster representing France, surrounded by sculptures commemorating the workers and doctors who sacrificed their lives to yellow fever and malaria (such as Cuban doctor Carlos Finlay).
